Designing the website for the International Climbers Festival
Three different events scatter the season. Brewfest is in June. Last year a Chili Beer won. Then July 4th, which deserves it’s own post. Finishing it off in mid-july is the International Climbers’ Festival. I am currently working on designing and maintaining the website for the festival. It can be seen here.
The site uses a customized WordPress theme with plugins for search engine optimization, photo galleries, and google analytics. There are a few interesting hacks to the theme.
- •There are two backgrounds, one in the <html> and one in the <body>
- •The photo background is static using background-attachment: fixed;
- •A sidebar twitter feed for @climbersfest uses a modified RSS widget
- •The silhouette of the climber is a photoshopped image of a friend in Sinks Canyon.
I made the site with direct input from the director of the ICF who said she wanted the option to make quick edits on the fly. I chose to use WordPress to create the site because of the built in, easy to use, blog system already set in place, and the wysiwyg (what you see is what you get) editor. Incorporating social network sites made it simple to get a base to call upon and send updates about the festival.
During the ICF this year I was able to use my iPhone to tweet festival updates. With the click of a button, I posted images and text to both the twitter site and climbersfestival.org.
