Canon Powershot SD780 IS – Review

August 21, 2009

I have been looking at cameras this week for my trip to Washington D.C. Reviews pointed me to Panasonic Lumix and Canon cameras. I narrowed the field down to the Canon G10 (The biggest of the small cameras, with the ability to shoot RAW and a widescreen lens, but no HD video, $500), the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ4 (leica/widescreen lens, no HD video, $249), and the Canon Powershot SD780 IS (a tiny powerhouse with 780p HD video, no widescreen lens, $249). After reviewing and playing with each camera I made my decision.

I purchased the Canon Powershot SD780 IS at Embassy Camera in Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C. I was very impressed with the friendly service and passionate staff there. I am even more impressed with the power of this small camera. The SD780 is very tiny, about the size of a credit card. There are very little manual controls which is fine considering the white/black balance and color quality is absolutely superb on the auto settings. I am very happy with my new camera!

Below are point-and-shoot pictures and video used only with the auto function during various weather/lighting conditions, no color editing or cropping occurred. See my Washington D.C. flickr set for more examples using this camera.
