Setting Up a Video Podcast

January 12, 2010

We just launched The NOLS Podcast here at work. Huzzah! It took weeks of concepting, hammering out ideas, making sure the creators of the podcast were on the same page, and getting the higher-up’s to sign off on the idea. Here is the first episode.

Here are some things I learned about setting up a podcast:

It can seem like a daunting task to set up a podcast. We used a blip.tv pro account to set up our podcast for iTunes. They do a great job of walking you through the necessary steps to get on iTunes and they can even automatically convert your video to be ipod/iphone compatible.

Give thought to what catagory you want to be listed in. We chose outdoors, rather then education based on looking at what type of podcasts we would be surrounded by, and what would get us the most exposure. Tagging, or keywords, for your podcast should be thought out carefully too. What kinds of search queries will your potential audience be using?

Make a podcast image for your iTunes page. One that is attractive and legible at small sizes. The image should be square and at least 600×600 pixels saved in either .jpg or .png format.

To send people directly to your podcast in the iTunes store, use Apple’s iTunes Link Maker page.

The best thing you can do is watch rival podcasts and see what they are doing. Then decide how you can make a better and more original podcast.

Good Resources:
Blip.tv – For distributing your podcast to iTunes, YouTube, and many  other video sites all at once.
Apple.com – Making A Podcast
PodBean.com – Podcasting How To FAQ

Check out The NOLS Podcast on iTunes! It’s exciting to see it up there.
