Search William Roth on Google and you can learn all about the late Senator from Delaware, whom the Roth IRA is named after. The problem is that William Roth is my name too – and I don’t show up until page 2, or Goo. People in social media need to have a front page presence on search engines to be considered for employment, or so I’m told. How do I compete with a popular Senator?
This question got me thinking of ways to get myself listed on the front page. Maintaining my blog, working on search engine optimization for all of my pages, and clicking on my links at any coffee shop I walk into, could all help. Though I am worried that I will never get pole-position. Then I started thinking about sponsored ads. If I paid for Google ads while my resume was out in the world, then anyone who tried to google me would find me right at the top, ready to show them my portfolio and blog.
My interest in this idea was renewed after seeing an article about a guy who took out Facebook ads to get a job at Conde Naste.
It costs a bit of money, but in an age where companies facebook-stalk potential employees, it seems like a way to stand out and be seen. What do you think?
