I filmed three of these segments while driving back from the 2010 Summer Outdoor Retailer Show. I had wanted to stagger their release but due to stomach issues this weekend I was unable to think up any content for the site.
In this episode of Thinking and Driving, I talk about getting a few “seasoned” NOLS instructors to walk the trade floor with me in full expedition gear. It’s an idea I had for NOLS Leadership Week, and I think the same thing could work on a college campus or city center for gaining some word-of-mouth. Here is Monty Python’s take on the same idea.
I also mention what NOLS likes to call “Teachable Moments.” You could call the idea of teaching someone how to use a conference map a little on the smartass side of things.. and I guess I agree, but there is something to be said for executing a perfect class right there at the booth.
I plan on putting a lot more brain power towards more effective, more realistic, and less expensive ideas before OR Winter. I will be sure to post them once I get a good list going. Also, stay tuned for episode 3 where I talk about QR codes that I saw at the conference and future ideas for QR codes.
